Vietnam temporary residence card (TRC)

In plain termsA temporary residence card is not a visa. You enter on a symbol; a sponsor files for the card; the max term follows the symbol band. Days on that card still feed tax residence.

Am I on an eligible symbol? Only the closed list can lead to a TRC. ĐT4 and a retirement path are not on it. See the closed list.
How long can the card last? Four bands — 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 years — follow the symbol. Open the term table when you need the exact row.
Who files, and what happens if sponsorship ends? The sponsor files. You cannot self-file. Job loss triggers sponsor duties — not a published day-count. Sponsorship ends.

TRC: Temporary residence card (thẻ tạm trú) — multi-year stay card filed by a sponsor.
Sponsor: The organisation or individual who must file the TRC dossier — the foreigner cannot self-file.
LĐ1 / LĐ2: Labour symbols — TRC band capped at 2 years on file.
TT · ĐT3: Family and investment symbols that still reach TRC (ĐT3 band up to 3 years).
ĐT4: Investment stamp that does not sit on the TRC-eligible list.
PR clock: Continuous temporary-residence count toward permanent residence — stamp presence, not “never left”.

Common questions

Who can get a Vietnam temporary residence card?

Holders of listed visa symbols under Luật Nhập cảnh Điều 36 khoản 1 điểm b — including LĐ1, LĐ2, TT, ĐT1–ĐT3, DH, and others on the published list. ĐT4 is not on that list.

Does Vietnam have a retirement visa that leads to a TRC?

No. Điều 8 lists the visa symbols in force; there is no retirement symbol. Long stay for retirement is not a dedicated immigration path.

How long can a TRC last?

It depends on the visa symbol. Examples: TT / NN1 / NN2 / ĐT3 up to 3 years; LĐ1 / LĐ2 / PV1 up to 2 years; ĐT1 / UĐ1 / UĐ2 up to 10 years; LV1 / LV2 / LS / ĐT2 / DH up to 5 years — each capped so the card expires at least 30 days before the passport.

Can I file the TRC application myself?

No. The sponsor files (Luật Nhập cảnh Điều 37 khoản 2 điểm b). Statutory processing after a complete dossier is 5 working days.

What happens when a TRC expires?

An expired card is replaced by a new card — not extended by a stamp (Điều 38 khoản 6).

What happens when the employer stops sponsoring me?

The sponsor must notify Immigration in writing that sponsorship is no longer needed while your stay documents remain valid, and must coordinate an exit request (Điều 45 khoản 2 điểm e). The Immigration Law does not publish a day-count for how long the card lasts after that — we refuse to invent one.

How much is the statutory TRC fee?

Under Thông tư 28/2026/TT-BTC (from 1 Apr 2026): up to 2 years = 145 USD; over 2 up to 5 years = 155 USD; over 5 up to 10 years = 165 USD. Labour-band cards (≤2 years) sit on the 145 USD row. Fees change by circular — high volatility.

How is “continuous temporary residence” for PR counted?

Thông tư 31/2015/TT-BCA: total presence of at least 3 years inside the most recent 4 years before filing, measured from entry/exit stamps — not “never left Vietnam for 3 years”.

Who declares my stay at the hotel or apartment?

Through the accommodation manager (Điều 33). Electronic declaration is immediate on arrival (TT 87/2026). Paper form: 12 hours normally, 24 hours in remote areas.

Vietnam temporary residence card (TRC)

In plain termsA temporary residence card is not a visa. You enter on a symbol; a sponsor files for the card; the max term follows the symbol band. Days on that card still feed tax residence.

Start here — three doors

Am I on an eligible symbol? Only the closed list can lead to a TRC. ĐT4 and a retirement path are not on it. See the closed list.
How long can the card last? Four bands — 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 years — follow the symbol. Open the term table when you need the exact row.
Who files, and what happens if sponsorship ends? The sponsor files. You cannot self-file. Job loss triggers sponsor duties — not a published day-count. Sponsorship ends.

TRC: Temporary residence card (thẻ tạm trú) — multi-year stay card filed by a sponsor.
Sponsor: The organisation or individual who must file the TRC dossier — the foreigner cannot self-file.
LĐ1 / LĐ2: Labour symbols — TRC band capped at 2 years on file.
TT · ĐT3: Family and investment symbols that still reach TRC (ĐT3 band up to 3 years).
ĐT4: Investment stamp that does not sit on the TRC-eligible list.
PR clock: Continuous temporary-residence count toward permanent residence — stamp presence, not “never left”.

Common questions

Who can get a Vietnam temporary residence card?

Holders of listed visa symbols under Luật Nhập cảnh Điều 36 khoản 1 điểm b — including LĐ1, LĐ2, TT, ĐT1–ĐT3, DH, and others on the published list. ĐT4 is not on that list.

Does Vietnam have a retirement visa that leads to a TRC?

No. Điều 8 lists the visa symbols in force; there is no retirement symbol. Long stay for retirement is not a dedicated immigration path.

How long can a TRC last?

Can I file the TRC application myself?

No. The sponsor files (Luật Nhập cảnh Điều 37 khoản 2 điểm b). Statutory processing after a complete dossier is 5 working days.

What happens when a TRC expires?

An expired card is replaced by a new card — not extended by a stamp (Điều 38 khoản 6).

What happens when the employer stops sponsoring me?

How much is the statutory TRC fee?

How is “continuous temporary residence” for PR counted?

Thông tư 31/2015/TT-BCA: total presence of at least 3 years inside the most recent 4 years before filing, measured from entry/exit stamps — not “never left Vietnam for 3 years”.

Who declares my stay at the hotel or apartment?

Through the accommodation manager (Điều 33). Electronic declaration is immediate on arrival (TT 87/2026). Paper form: 12 hours normally, 24 hours in remote areas.
