Earn in Thailand

In plain termsThree doors: stay (visa stamp), earn (work permit or LTR bundle), tax (180 days + remittance on the tax pillar). A visa alone does not grant local work — the filed cell says stay and earn are separate machines.

Local work needs a permit

Employment for a Thai entity: yes. Reserved occupations for Thai nationals: yes. Stay and earn are separate: yes.

The DTV trap

Client trapA Destination Thailand Visa is a stay path, not permission to work locally: yes. Remote payroll from abroad still feeds Thai tax residence if you remit — read the tax pillar — but it does not replace a work permit for a Bangkok employer.

LTR and digital work

LTR programme: 4 categories; validity 10 years; fee 50000 THB. Digital-work permit bundled: yes. Category fit is not interchangeable — the BOI publishes which limb covers remote work for foreign employers.

Common questions

Can I work in Thailand on a DTV?
No. The filed cell states that a DTV is not a work permit. Remote income for a foreign employer and local employment are different machines — stay on the visa pillar, earn here.
Do I need a work permit for a Thai employer?
Yes for local work: the filed cell states that local employment needs a permit unless another statutory path applies. Nationality does not invent a shortcut.
Does LTR let me work remotely?
LTR can include a digital-work permit path — the filed cell states whether that bundle exists. It is category-specific; read the LTR categories on ltr.boi.go.th, not an agent summary.
Are some jobs reserved for Thai nationals?
Yes — the filed cell states that reserved occupations exist. Teaching, diving, and other fields can hit this wall even when your visa and permit dossier are otherwise clean.
