When does a foreigner become an FX resident in Vietnam?

The ordinance cell on this page treats a foreigner as an FX resident after 12 months’ stay, with listed exceptions. That clock is not the tax-residence test and not a bank’s KYC pack.

Can I remit money abroad as a foreigner in Vietnam?

Once you are an FX resident, you may buy foreign currency from lawful VND income and remit it abroad under the ordinance cell. Banks still add their own KYC — those checklists are not statute.

Do I have to declare cash at the border?

Cash in or out above the filed USD and VND thresholds must be declared. The thresholds sit on the cells below.

Can I price rent or a salary in US dollars inside Vietnam?

Domestic FX pricing and payment are generally banned under the ordinance cell. That is a Vietnam-side FX gate, not a tax-treaty question.

If I open a payment account, can I remit?

No. Foreigners sit inside the payment-account rules scope. Remitting abroad is a separate FX-resident door. Tax residence is a third door.

Does my passport’s tax overlay change FX rules?

No. Tax residence and the FX ordinance are different doors. Remittance still hits FX rules even when a DTA decides which state taxes the income.

Common questions

When does a foreigner become an FX resident in Vietnam?

The ordinance cell on this page treats a foreigner as an FX resident after 12 months’ stay, with listed exceptions. That clock is not the tax-residence test and not a bank’s KYC pack.

Can I remit money abroad as a foreigner in Vietnam?

Once you are an FX resident, you may buy foreign currency from lawful VND income and remit it abroad under the ordinance cell. Banks still add their own KYC — those checklists are not statute.

Do I have to declare cash at the border?

Cash in or out above the filed USD and VND thresholds must be declared. The thresholds sit on the cells below.

Can I price rent or a salary in US dollars inside Vietnam?

Domestic FX pricing and payment are generally banned under the ordinance cell. That is a Vietnam-side FX gate, not a tax-treaty question.

If I open a payment account, can I remit?

No. Foreigners sit inside the payment-account rules scope. Remitting abroad is a separate FX-resident door. Tax residence is a third door.

Does my passport’s tax overlay change FX rules?

No. Tax residence and the FX ordinance are different doors. Remittance still hits FX rules even when a DTA decides which state taxes the income.
