Three clocks — account, FX, tax — do not share a start date

In plain termsA payment account is KYC. Foreign-exchange (FX) residence for a foreigner is filed after 12 months’ stay. Tax residence often uses 183 days. Remittance reads the FX clock.

Payment accountYou can sit in the account-rules scope. Not remittance. You tell payroll “the account exists, so dollars can leave.”
12-month FX residenceBuy FX from lawful VND income and remit (yes). You treat month four as if the ordinance had run.
183-day tax residenceWorldwide PIT if resident. Not the remittance form. You skip FX because the tax calculator already turned red.

Common wrong movesDo not add 183 to 12.
  • Using tax residence as a remittance licence.
  • Using a payment account as proof you are an FX resident.
  • Pricing rent in USD because remittance felt obvious.
If you need to send money this monthAsk which clock has actually run.
  • If you are under 12 months, do not promise an FX-resident remit.
  • If you are over 183 days, open tax residency — that is PIT, not NHNN.
  • Pension remittance still uses this FX limb plus the pension PIT page.

Common questions

If I open a Vietnam bank account, can I remit abroad?

Opening a payment account is not remittance. Foreigners sit inside payment-account rules. Buying foreign currency from lawful VND income and remitting is an FX-resident door.

Is 183 days the remittance test?

No. Tax residence often uses a 183-day test. FX residence for a foreigner is filed at 12 months’ stay, with listed exceptions. Do not add the two clocks together.

If I am already a tax resident, am I automatically FX resident?

Not from this page. The ordinances are different. A bank’s KYC pack is a third list — not statute.
