A child born in Vietnam is a civil-status event — not a stay product
In plain termsRegister the birth. Then test nationality, stay symbol, and health cover as three separate doors. A hospital bracelet is none of them.
Start here — three checks
- Register the birth. yes
- Nationality follows a parent, not the soil. Vietnamese parent limb: yes
- Stay and BHYT are not automatic. Birth certificate as TRC symbol: no. Household BHYT numeric path: no.
Four doors after the hospital
| What you need | What is filed | If you skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate / khai sinh | Civil-status registration is mandatory. | Later passport, school, and visa files have no identity event. |
| Vietnamese nationality | Opens if a parent is Vietnamese. Birth in Vietnam alone is not that limb. | You wait for a “born here” passport that the statute does not give. |
| Child’s stay / TRC | Follows a qualifying family or study symbol — not the birth certificate. | You treat khai sinh as an immigration stamp. |
| BHYT for the newborn | Household path for a foreign parent’s newborn is unpublished as a numeric cell. | You assume the parent’s employee BHYT covers the baby automatically. |
Common wrong movesSchools and clinics ask different questions.
- Delaying civil-status registration because the foreign passport appointment is later.
- Using the birth certificate as if it were a TRC.
- Confusing school enrolment supply (FDI curriculum rules) with the child’s stay symbol.
If both parents are foreignStay still needs a lawful symbol.
- Register the birth anyway.
- File the child’s stay on a family or study symbol that actually exists.
- Treat BHYT household cover as unpublished — buy private cover until a statute cell exists.

Common questions
Does a baby born in Vietnam automatically get Vietnamese nationality?
Not from the birthplace alone. A child with a Vietnamese parent may acquire Vietnamese nationality. Two foreign parents do not get a jus-soli shortcut from this cell.
Is registering the birth enough for a temporary residence card?
No. Birth must be registered as a civil-status event. A birth certificate alone is not a filed TRC-eligible visa symbol. The child’s stay still needs a qualifying family or study symbol.
Can I put the newborn on household BHYT through my foreign parent cover?
Compulsory BHYT for foreign employees keys to a labour contract of at least 12 months. A numeric household-enrolment path for a newborn of a foreign parent is not filed here.
