FDI and plant work — where many foreigners actually earn

In plain termsOutside the English-teaching market, a large share of foreign salaries sits in industrial parks and FDI offices — often Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Taiwanese groups hiring managers, engineers, and plant IT. That is still the Vietnam-employer door.

What this page is

A field briefing for roles you see posted for Bắc Ninh, Bình Dương, Đồng Nai, Hải Phòng, Thái Nguyên, and the big-city FDI offices. Nationality of the parent company does not create a special visa. A visa alone does not grant work (no).

Who is hiring on the ground

Headhunters and plant HR routinely search for Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Taiwanese natives for production management, sales into the mother market, QC, and shop-floor leadership. Western multinationals hire plant IT, EHS, supply-chain, and operations leads for greenfield and brownfield sites. Titles change. The labour stack does not.

Allowed position limbs on file: manager, executive, expert, technician. Map your title to manager, executive, expert, or technician — not to a LinkedIn label.

Production, sales, and QC managers

Manager means enterprise manager under Enterprise Law Art 4(24), or head/deputy head of an agency/organisation. Executive limb: branch or department head (yes) with experience 3 years. Expert with a university degree generally needs 2 years of matching experience; priority fields can drop that to 1 years.

Priority-field confirmation on file (finance; science & technology; innovation; national digital transformation — with ministry/provincial confirmation) can open an exemption path — confirm the ministry or provincial paper before you rely on it. Ordinary plant management is usually permit-required.

Issuing authority: provincial People's Committee where the foreigner will work. Industrial-zone roles often mean provincial paper, not a Hanoi/HCMC assumption.

Technicians, plant IT, logistics

Technician paths: training ≥ 1 years plus experience 2 years, or experience-only 3 years. Plant IT and logistics leads usually land as expert or manager depending on the dossier — still employer door.

Stay usually LĐ2 then TRC capped at 2 years for those symbols. Tax: resident worldwide income (yes); non-resident employment flat 20%.

Intra-company transfer

Work form b on the filed list (a employment contract; b intra-company transfer; c economic/social contracts; d contractual service supplier; đ service seller; e volunteer; g commercial-presence founder; h secondment (ex-ICT); i project/bid packages; k diplomatic-family treaty work; l board/owner capital under 3bn VND; m employment with foreign mission/org in VN). Exemption limb requires prior continuous employment with the foreign group of at least 12 months. Practice treats the Vietnam entity as host — still foreign-worker paper, still not a remote-visa product.

Short install, train, advise

Under 90 days work days in a calendar year, a permit exemption limb is on file. Adjacent short limbs: service sale under three months (yes) and complex tech incident under three months (yes). Useful for commissioning trips. Useless as a lifestyle remote plan.

Commercial-presence founder

Person responsible for establishing a commercial presence (yes). Narrow. After the entity exists, you usually land on invest or ordinary employer doors — see own a business.

Common questions

Do Korean or Japanese factory managers need a Vietnam work permit?
Usually yes if a Vietnam entity employs you. Foreign workers generally need a permit unless a filed exemption fits — including intra-company transfer limbs with prior continuous employment. Nationality does not invent a separate visa product.
Is industrial-park work different from Ho Chi Minh City office work?
Geography changes the provincial issuing authority and your commute. It does not change the four layers: purpose, stay symbol, temporary residence card, and work rights. Tax days still run on residence tests.
What is intra-company transfer (ICT) in Vietnam?
A filed work form and an exemption limb for transfers inside a foreign group to its Vietnam commercial presence. Prior continuous employment with the foreign group must clear the filed month count. It is still a foreign-worker stack — not a remote visa.
Can I come for a short factory install without a full permit?
Under the filed day-count limb, work under the calendar-year day threshold can be permit-exempt. Adjacent short limbs cover some service-sale and tech-incident cases. Day-count still feeds tax residence. Confirm the limb before you treat a short trip as informal.
