Common questions

Can I work on any Portuguese residence card?

No. Local hire needs a lawful work-purpose route. A stay purpose that is not work — and a tax-residence election — do not by themselves authorise employment.

Does a Golden Visa let me work and take IFICI?

Those are separate layers. Investment residence (ARI), work authority, and the IFICI tax incentive each answer a different question. Do not collapse them.

Do I need a job before I arrive?

For subordinate work, yes. The residence visa depends on a work contract or a written promise of one, filed with the visa request in your country of origin. The old route that let you regularise from inside without a visa (Art. 88(2) 'expression of interest') was revoked on 4 June 2024 by Decreto-Lei 37-A/2024.
