Common questions
Does opening a Portuguese company give me residence?
No. Company formation and immigration are separate. Article 89(1) still requires the matching residence visa and evidence of independent activity; a company permanent certificate is one possible supporting document, not a residence grant by itself.
Can I regularise independent work from inside Portugal without a visa?
Not through the old Article 89(2) route. It was revoked from 4 June 2024, preserving only procedures started by 3 June 2024.
Is StartUP Visa a general founder visa?
No. AIMA requires an IAPMEI declaration showing admission to a certified incubator for an innovative company. It is not a shortcut for opening any ordinary company.
Can an employed Article 88 holder start freelancing immediately?
AIMA says the holder must request substitution of the residence title before moving into independent activity.
