Creative work — bookings still need a labour door

In plain termsAgencies book foreign models. Production houses hire photographers and creatives. Clubs and shows hire performers. Money from a Vietnam payer is Vietnam-employer labour unless a filed short limb fits. A visa alone does not grant work (no).

What you see on the ground

HCMC and Hanoi run fashion, commercial, and entertainment bookings. Foreign faces appear in campaigns and events. Some stay on multi-month agency contracts; others fly in for short shoots. The Instagram lifestyle is loud; the labour stack is quiet and ordinary.

Agency / production employment

Foreign workers generally need a work permit (yes). Map the role to expert or technician (manager, executive, expert, technician) with degree/experience limbs — or manager if you lead a creative unit. Stay usually LĐ2, TRC capped at 2 years. Forms a and m need a written contract before start (yes).

Working without a lawful labour basis risks forced exit or deportation.

Short shoots and day-count limbs

Under 90 days work days in a calendar year, a permit exemption limb is on file. Adjacent short limbs cover some service-sale and tech-incident cases. Useful for fly-in talent. Useless as a full-time “creative visa.”

Culture and performance paper

Public performances and some entertainment events can need culture/sports permissions from competent authorities — separate from immigration cells on this site. We do not invent those schedules here. Ask the Vietnam organiser which culture permit the booking requires before you treat labour paper as the only gate.

Freelance split

Only foreign clients / foreign payroll → remote door. Vietnam brands and agencies paying you → employer-risk until labour paper is clear. Opening your own studio or production LLC → own a business.

Tax

Resident worldwide (yes). Non-resident employment flat 20%.

Common questions

Can foreigners model or shoot commercially in Vietnam?
Paid commercial work for a Vietnam agency, production house, or brand usually needs a work permit or a filed short-stay exemption — plus any culture/performance permissions the shoot requires. A tourist stamp is not a booking sheet.
What about short fashion weeks or one-off shoots?
Under the filed day-count limb, work under the calendar-year day threshold can be permit-exempt. Confirm the limb and any culture permits before you treat a shoot as informal.
Can I freelancing-photo for Vietnam clients on an e-visa?
Vietnam clients paying you for labour look like employer-risk work. Offshore-only clients while you live here sit on the remote door — still no remote visa, tax residence still runs.
